It's no secret that Americans are some of the heaviest people in the world, and a large number are constantly in search of the best ways to lose weight. Fortunately for those who struggle to keep their waste line trim, two decades of research may have yielded an answer.

In three individual studies analyzing how alterations in multiple lifestyle and dietary factors relate to weight gain, Harvard researchers found that slight changes in TV-watching, physical activity, seep duration and specific eating habits had a significant impact on long-term weight gain.

Studying effective weight loss

In conducting each study, researchers looked at changes in multiple lifestyle factors of tens of thousands of Americans during a 12 to 20 year period. When they matched certain lifestyle changes with corresponding weight gain, the results were remarkably similar in all three studies.

Foods linked to the greatest amount of weight gain over the two-decade long study included sugar-sweetened beverages, potato chips, and processed meat. On the other hand, those whose eating habits gradually moved toward the consumption of whole grains, vegetables, yogurt and nuts experienced consistent weight loss.

Behavioral patterns also seemed to affect weight gain. For example, according to the researchers, those who watched more television gained more weight than those who didn't. Additionally, participants who slept at least 6 to 8 hours every night did not gain as much weight as those who slept for fewer hours every night.

What are the best ways to lose weight?

According to the researchers, the average adult gains about a pound per year; however, because weight gain tends to occur over an extended period of time, it's been difficult for scientists to pin down a root cause.

According to Frank Hu, a professor at Harvard School of Public Health, the study's results suggest that people should focus less on the amount of calories they are eating and more on what types of foods they are eating and the types of behaviors they engage in. Hu says engaging in better habits can prevent weight gain by regulating insulin levels and reducing hunger.

Eating specific foods to lose weight

To encourage weight loss and promote health, the study's researchers suggest that people avoid liquid sugars (soda and juice), refined grains (white rice, bread, etc.), and starch-based foods, such as corn and potatoes. Additionally, those interested in losing weight or maintaining their current physique should eat more vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains and yogurt. They should also get plenty of sleep and regular physical activity.
