Can You Paint Stainless Steel?

You can paint stainless steel if you’ve prepared it in the appropriate manner. First, thoroughly scrub the metal with a water-based degreasing cleanser. Once it’s rinsed and dried, apply a self-etching primer using a synthetic, polyester paintbrush. After about three hours, the acidic etching primer will bond to the metal. You may then apply one or two coats of paint, and the finish should remain durable for a relatively long period of time.

    Tips & Warnings

  • Don’t use ordinary latex or oil-based primer on stainless steel.
  • Avoid nylon brushes, which may leave marks in the finish.
